Endoscopic ear surgery (also known as endoscopic micro-ear resection, endoscopic micro mastoid resection, and endoscopic canal repair) is the use of an endoscope and other small instruments to treat diseases and deformities of the external ear canal and inner ear. Endoscopic ear surgery produces more minor scars than traditional techniques, which helps reduce the risk of post-operative infection or re-occurrence of the problem.
Endoscopic surgery can be done through one nostril or with a small cut behind the ear at the top of the neck. The surgeon will examine your ears to see whether they have a deformity or are infected. If so, you might need a general anaesthetic for this operation. If not, local anaesthetic injections around your ears may be enough to numb them sufficiently during the procedure. In some cases, you may also require sedation if you are anxious about having this operation
During endoscopic ear surgery, an incision may be made in the skin of the ear canal to widen it, or a small cut may be made behind the ear at the top of the neck to access the ear. The surgeon then inserts an otoscope into the ear canal and examines the eardrum, eardrum, and inside of the ear canal. If the ear drum is ruptured or inflamed, it may be removed; if it is intact, it may be repaired. A narrow ear canal may be widened by removing a portion of the cartilage that narrows the canal. If the ear canal is infected, the area is irrigated, and antibiotics are applied.
Ear surgery using an endoscope is done through a small incision behind the ear or through a nostril. The surgeon may remove a portion of the ear canal (eardrum) if it is infected or scarred. The canal may then be widened with the use of a small laser. The surgeon may also remove too much ear wax.
Recovery times can vary depending on the type of surgery performed. Many people can return to work within a few days after the procedure and can return to strenuous physical activity (sports) within two weeks. It is best to avoid water activities and other activities that might cause water to enter the ears after the surgery. People may experience some pain, swelling, and drainage of fluid from the ear after the surgery. It is important to follow the instructions given by the surgeon after the operation to help speed up the healing process and avoid complications.
• Shorter recovery times
• Minimized risk of infection
• Reduction in scarring
• No stitches
• Quicker return to work/activities
• Fewer incisions may reduce the risk of infection
